(at least 10 years Enterprise architect) but 20 years ago I remember seing Gantt charts in every project's PowerPoint and as a developer I remember being asked for input and when I got dragged to manage projects I had to use MS Project. Maybe it's my own perception bias as I haven't been on the trenches for a long time. When at the end of the project the PM sees that it was done within the time frame and cost projected in a Gant chart they feel great, when in reality, it means that the work could have been finished in 1/2 the time or twice as much could've got done.Īnd yes, there are some people who know how to use MS Project properly but they are a rare breed and they are almost never software engineers. "work will expand to fill the time alloted for its completion". To be on the safe side, when planning a set cost/set time kind of project, numbers will get padded and we know that Parkinson's law will manifest there. Visual analysis is different than planning a software project with them.
